Questions to Ask Before You Trust a Jewelry OEM With Your Brand

By Melinda October 22nd, 2026 8 views

Picking a jewelry manufacturer is one of the highest-stakes decisions a new brand makes. Pick wrong, and you're looking at missed launch windows, tarnished pieces that come back under warranty, and customers who never come back. Pick right, and your supplier quietly becomes part of your competitive advantage.

At HZW Jewelry, we've manufactured private-label jewelry for DTC brands, boutique buyers, Amazon sellers, and wholesale distributors for years. We've also seen which questions separate serious brand founders from first-time guessers. Before you sign your next production order, run through these seven.

1. Can you send physical samples before bulk production?

Any manufacturer that hesitates on samples is a red flag. Ask for:

  • A sample in your target material (925 sterling silver, brass, stainless steel, gold-vermeil)
  • Real plating thickness, not "as requested"
  • The actual finish (matte, polished, rhodium, antique)

Pro move: Ask them to make the sample with your exact stone setting and chain length. If the sample looks and feels right, bulk production will too. If it doesn't, you just saved yourself 500 units of regret.

2. What is your minimum order quantity — and can it flex?

MOQs in jewelry manufacturing vary wildly: 50 pieces per SKU for small-batch work, 500+ for serious production. At HZW Jewelry, our typical OEM starts at 50 pieces per design, which lets emerging brands test a style before committing.

The trap isn't the number itself — it's whether the factory will raise the MOQ on your second order after you've retooled packaging and photography around them. Get the MOQ policy in writing.

3. What is your plating process, and how long will it actually last?

This is where most cheap jewelry brands die. "18K gold plating" means nothing without thickness specs.

Ask specifically:

  • Plating thickness in microns (0.03 micron is costume; 0.5+ micron is vermeil-grade)
  • Whether they use e-coating / clear protective lacquer on top
  • Salt-spray test results (ask for the report, not a verbal promise)

At HZW Jewelry, we publish the plating thickness on every work order, because "looks gold" is not a specification.

4. Do you do your own casting, or outsource it?

Factories that outsource casting lose control of quality. Walk the floor (or ask for a video walkthrough). You want to see:

  • In-house casting
  • In-house stone setting
  • In-house polishing
  • In-house plating

If any step goes to a subcontractor, your lead time and defect rate both go up.

5. What is your defect rate — and how do you handle returns?

Don't accept "we have quality control." Ask for a number. A competent jewelry factory runs at under 2% defective on bulk orders.

Then ask the follow-up: when a defect does show up, do they remake, refund, or credit? What's the turnaround? Get this on the quote.

6. Can you handle the styles I'm actually selling?

"Full-service jewelry manufacturer" on a website doesn't mean they can do everything. Look at their existing portfolio:

  • Do they have experience with pearl-adorned pieces?
  • Do they produce punk / chunky chain designs with the right weight and feel?
  • Do they make religious-themed pendants (crosses, medals, icons) with the required detail?

A factory that only does thin, dainty necklaces will not suddenly nail a heavy curb chain — no matter how much they promise.

7. What happens after the order ships?

The best manufacturers stay accountable after delivery. Ask:

  • Will they hold raw materials for your reorders?
  • Can they replicate a design 18 months later without you re-sampling?
  • Do they offer design iteration support when your customers ask for tweaks?

Find a manufacturer that treats your brand like its own

At HZW Jewelry, we don't just churn out jewelry — we partner with founders who are building something they intend to last. From pearl bridal sets to punk-chain everyday pieces, from delicate religious pendants to wholesale capsule collections, every piece goes through our own casting, setting, polishing, and plating floor.

Request a sample pack or book a demo call — we'll show you our current production line and tell you honestly whether we're the right factory for your next collection.
